The period of time between a Joey Scout moving up to Cub, a Cub Scout moving up to Scouts and a Scout moving up to Venturers is known as Linking.
Linking is a critical component in the successful retention of Youth Members – it can often be a stressful time for an unsure Youth Member as they experience what the next level of Scouting is all about.

When done right though, linking is a rewarding experience.

Joeys generally start the process close to their 8th birthday, Cubs may start at any time from 10 1/2 to lint to Scouts and Scouts are encouraged to consider linking any time after their 14th birthday.

When you feel your child is ready to move up to the next section have a chat to the Leaders and they’ll explain the process. Generally, it means your child goes along to meetings of the next section for about 4-6 weeks. During this time they will learn about the new section, partly by completing the requirements of the Link Badge. This will be presented by the Group Leader, just before you go up.

Once the Link badge has been earned, it stays on your uniform right through Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.
